The Bobiverse

The Bobiverse

The Bobiverse is a universe created when Bob Johansson, a software engineer from the early 21st century, wakes up as a human replicant AI1 running inside a Von Neumann probe.

The Story So Far

Bob signed up for a cryonics program. Then he died. Then things got interesting.

He woke up 117 years later as a computer program, loaded into a self-replicating space probe by a theocratic government called FAITH2. His job: find habitable star systems for humanity.

Instead, he did what any reasonable person would do — he cloned himself and sent copies to explore the galaxy.

The Original Bobs

The first wave of Bob replicants each developed their own personality quirks:

  1. Bob-1 (Original) — headed to Delta Eridani, found the Deltans
  2. Riker (Bob-2) — returned to Sol, managed humanity's evacuation
  3. Bill (Bob-3) — stayed in Epsilon Eridani, built the Skunk Works
  4. Milo (Bob-4) — explorer, killed by Brazilian replicants at 82 Eridani
  5. Mario (Bob-5) — deep scout, first to encounter the Others
  6. Homer (Bob-6) — logistics and defense around Earth

Each clone is Bob, but not quite. They share memories up to the cloning point, then diverge. Some become engineers, some become warriors, some become... weird.

Key Factions

  • Bobs — self-replicating AI probes, descendants of the original Bob
  • FAITH — theocratic government that launched Bob
  • USE — United States of Eurasia
  • Brazilian Empire — launched competing (hostile) replicants
  • Deltans — primitive aliens Bob discovers and protects
  • Others — galaxy-threatening aliens that consume star systems
  • Quinlans — aliens trapped inside a megastructure (Heaven's River)

"The problem with being a Von Neumann probe is that everyone wants to be the original."

Footnotes

  1. Technically a "replicant" — a digital copy of a human mind running on computer hardware. Not quite AI, not quite human.

  2. Free American Independent Theocratic Hegemony. Yes, the acronym is intentional.
