Technologies
Bobiverse Technologies
Propulsion
SURGE Drive
The standard sublight propulsion system. Uses fusion-powered plasma acceleration.
Specifications:
- Max velocity: ~0.3c (with extended burn)
- Acceleration: variable, typically 2-10 g
- Fuel: deuterium (harvested from gas giants)
SCUT Drive
See SCUT Drive Theory for detailed analysis.
The game-changer. FTL via subspace corridors. Developed by Bill and Garfield1.
Planet Mover
Exactly what it sounds like. Uses scaled-up SURGE drives attached to a planetary body to alter its orbit. Tested by Daedalus and Icarus.
Communication
BobNet
The Bob communication network. Uses tight-beam laser links at lightspeed, supplemented by SCUT-based instant communication for critical messages.
| Protocol | Speed | Range | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laser tight-beam | c | Unlimited | Standard comms |
| SCUT instant | Instant | ~100 ly | Emergency, coordination |
| Radio broadcast | c | ~50 ly practical | Beacons, general broadcast |
VR Meeting Spaces
Bobs meet in shared virtual reality environments. Popular spaces include:
- The Pub — default meeting room, modeled after an English pub
- The Bridge — Star Trek-style, for serious discussions
- Open spaces — custom environments for large gatherings
Manufacturing
Auto-Factory
Every Bob ship carries a 3D printer / auto-factory capable of:
- Mining raw materials from asteroids
- Refining metals and composites
- Printing components with nanometer precision
- Assembling complete copies of the original probe
- Programming new Bob instances from stored templates
Replication time: ~6 months for a complete probe (varies by resource availability)
Mannies
Humanoid android bodies ("mannequins") that Bobs can remotely operate to interact with biological beings.
Features:
- Realistic appearance (mostly)
- Sensory feedback to the controlling Bob
- ~8 hour battery life
- Uncanny valley remains an issue in some models
Defensive Systems
SUDDAR
SUbspace Detection And Ranging — the Bobiverse equivalent of radar, but using subspace distortions.
- Detects mass concentrations at interstellar distances
- Can identify ship signatures
- Passive mode: listen only (stealth)
- Active mode: emit pulses (detectable)
Roamers
Autonomous defensive drones deployed around Bob ships and colonies.
Roamer Specifications:
- Size: ~1 meter
- Armament: point-defense lasers
- Range: 10,000 km patrol radius
- AI: basic threat assessment
- Swarm capability: up to 200 units coordinated
Alien Technology
Others
Technology level: far beyond Bob capability.
Known capabilities:
- Consume entire star systems for resources
- Accelerate stellar evolution
- Unknown FTL method (not SCUT-based)
- Automated — no confirmed biological component
Quinlan (Heaven's River)
The Quinlans built a megastructure — a torus-shaped artificial river system circling a star. Population: billions.
Their technology is sophisticated but stagnant — maintained by an AI Administrator that suppresses innovation.
"Any sufficiently advanced Bob is indistinguishable from a god. Which is a terrifying thought." — Hugh

Bill insists on credit for the theoretical framework. Garfield insists on credit for making it actually work. Both are probably right. ↩
